This is awkward to share but I feel that I should. About a year ago, I was in the grip of a particularly poorly timed episode and I was desperate to make it go away. I tried everything I could think of caffeine pills, energy drinks, anxiety pills, depression pills unsurprisingly nothing worked. Then for some reason I thought of Salvia divinorum. I can’t tell you why I thought of it perhaps it had to do with the brief period of derealization/hallucinations that is similar to my experience of KLS. Or maybe it was the feeling as if my mind was rebooted after using it. (I had only used salvia 2x in my life until that point and although I owned some for a over a year I had no interest in consuming it, but again, I was desperate). Anyway I took some, and I got better within an hour. I thought the recovery was linked to the salvia but I did not know if it could have been a coincidence so I didn’t share the story at that time.
Since then I have had two episodes both ended within an hour of consuming salvia. I no longer think this is a coincidence, however I am not recommending anyone go out there and try without very serious consideration. Salvia can make you hallucinate it will have some sort of psychoactive effect it could be very very bad!!!!  Nevertheless, it worked so fast I think the experience should be shared.
I did some research and it seems salvia is a “kappa opioid agonists” (I do not know what this means).  Professor Bryan L. Roth, director of the National Institute on Mental Health’s Psychoactive Drug Screening Program, thinks this could have potential uses in treating “Alzheimer’s, depression, schizophrenia, chronic pain.” And many users report an anti-depressant-like effect. Nobody has ever died from using salvia and there is no evidence of toxicity in animal studies.  There is also some evidence that it lowers dopamine levels. See http://www.springerlink.com/content/2e2e65wvctqbenvl/.  (I AM NOT A DOCTOR I DO NOT KNOW WHAT ANY OF THIS MEDICAL STUFF MEANS – THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE)
My experience with salvia is that after the brief effects of consumption wear off (lasting no more than 30 minutes) I feel completely better. I am a little warm, euphoric, and have energy). Unfortunately doing this at night makes sleep difficult (but as you know that is a welcomed reprieve).
I am writing this with the hope that one of three things may occur (1) a research reads this and thinks the issue is worth examining, (2) a adult KLS suffer who has used salvia divinorum in the past might consider being a lab rat and reporting on the results… (AGAIN, I AM NOT A DOCTOR, I AM NOT A RESEARCHER, I CANNOT TELL YOU WHAT EFFECT THIS MIGHT HAVE ON YOU – IMAGINE THE WORST!!!) or (3) somebody out there may have had the same crazy idea (and it was CRAZY) and has similar (or dissimilar) results.

If you have questions about what I did or what happened I am more than willing to answer them. If you comment in the post I will get back to you.

Best,
Caroline

Reminder – I think the fact that I chose to try this was stupid and likely a bad decision, nevertheless it worked for me. Just because it works for me does not mean it will work for you! Many KLS suffers receive relief by using different types of medicines. I am not promising you any results this might not work for you this might make you worse!!! I am not a doctor this is not medical advice. I am only sharing this because it worked for me and I hope that this might help others.

I was just wondering if anyone else has looked into this or has tried it. My son wanted to try it, but I’m concerned about the level of safeness.

THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE, I AM NOT A DOCTOR

This post is intended to relay my expereince. I am not asking or suggesting that you to replicate this.

If you choose to replicate this please fully research what you are doing and please post any experiences positive or negative.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Recently that post has received a fair amount of attention and it seems as if 4-5 people have tried Salvia and experienced recoveries in within 2 days of treatment. I have been informed that there is science that supports the use of salvia because apparently it interacts with the same receptors in a specific area of the brain known to be affected by KLS. Obviously it is still experimental; however nobody who has used this has told me that it worsened their episodes. There is also no indication in literature about salvia causing long-term effects in humans and there is no evidence that salvia is toxic in high amounts. That is to say that it is relatively safe to try. I say ‘relatively’ because it will have effects on your perception and at high doses it can cause hallucinations (there are a number of people who recorded taking it in youtube videos but those are extremely high doses – comparatively it would be the difference between taking 1 shot of vodka vs. 8-20 shots of vodka.).
So the background of salvia use is that I used it once or twice in college recreationally the person who let me try it did not like it very much and therefore gave it to me. Later I linked the effects of salvia and the effects of KLS and in a state of desperation to get better I tried it. It worked! It has worked 5 times for me since (which has been every episode). Like I said there has been a fair amount of interest in salvia as a treatment for KLS recently so a few others have tried it and have all had positive results.
If you want to try it you will need to obtain some. You can do this online or find a local headshop (‘glass pipe’ or tobacco stores). This is a substance you have to smoke but only in an extremely small quantity. You can technically take it orally by leaving it in the mouth but this will cause the ‘high’ to last longer.  Another consideration is the dosage. This substance can be enhanced substantially often times you will find something called an extract. The strength of the extract is indicated by a number before an ‘x’ for example 10x, 20x, 30x, 60x etc. I use 30x but a very small amount of it (less than a pinch) others have had success using 10x. Either way you will not need to take more than one or two breaths in order to have the desired effect.
You will also need a pipe of some sort to smoke it in. This is a link to a picture of the type of pipe I use - http://home.earthlink.net/~robsss/grfx/BowlPic.jpg. These are typically referred to as marijuana bowls (however you cannot call them a ‘bowl’ otherwise they become narcotic paraphilias and illegal). So if you are looking to buy one you need to refer to it as a ‘glass pipe’ or ‘glass tobacco pipe.’  When you use this you put a pinch of the substance in the cone shaped area and use a lighter to heat it. The active substance is vaporized at a very high temperature thus you want to expose it directly to the flames while you are smoking it. To do this you use a lighter in one hand and hold the pipe with the other. Use the flame to ignite the substance place your finger over the small airhole (marked ‘carb’ in the picture) then breathe in. You need to hold it in as long a possible 20-30 seconds or more and you should not need more than one or two breaths to feel some sort of effect. Once you have breathed in you want to hand the pipe to somebody else to hold while you wait for the effects to start. Usually within 45 seconds to a minute. If you do not feel anything you might need to take another breath of it.
The effects depend on your dosage and can vary from affecting your understanding or the time and space around you, to eye closed hallucinations, to eyes open hallucination. These effects should last 1-4 minutes (usually near the lower end of that spectrum). Make sure you experience some sort of perception effect because then you know you have had a sufficient dose but I rarely take more than is needed to effect my time and space perception.  You should be sitting when you take this. It even better to be leaning against a wall or leaning back into a corner. I have never met anybody who stood up and ran around but always have somebody present to make sure you don’t do anything that might hurt yourself.  Some people will have a giggling fit while using this but that is usually the extent of the effects.
Once the main effects subside some effects may linger for up to 30 min. These might include being a little unstable or having a slightly different perception of size, space, or time. Salvia has a very short half-life and is 75% out of your body within an hour. Drug tests do not screen for it either if that is a concern, although it cannot be detected in your body after 90 minutes anyway.
In my experience my KLS symptoms start to slowly resolve as the salvia effects wear off, to the extent that I have occasionally been able to watch TV within an hour or so after use (when treating early on in the episode before the severe symptoms arise, the worse the symptoms then the longer the time it will take for me to recover. Usually by the next morning I will have made a complete recovery. I’ve used this five times to treat my KLS and it has worked quickly every time.

I hope this answers all your questions, post if you need more info.

Thanks for your reply.  Have you ever tried the dried salvia leaves?  Unable to obtain the extract in Australia

My research indicates that possession of salvia is a crime in Australia. However the salvia that I am referring to is in a dried leaf form the difference is that it is enhanced through a certain process to make it more potent. If you can only obtain regular strength leaves then more would have to be consumed. I’m not sure how much would be needed to make it work.

I have tried salvia divinorum once and it did not feel like a treatment. It felt like a recreational or street drug. I would not recommend it.
